Description and research notes

The 1981 one hundred dollars note represents the reintroduction and continuation of New Zealand’s highest denomination within the revised decimal currency series, issued during the ND (1981–1985) period under the signature of H.R. Hardie as Chief Cashier. This issue belongs to the later Hardie design phase, distinguished by the updated portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, presenting a more mature likeness compared to the earlier ND (1977–1981) series bearing the same signatory.

Printed by Bradbury, Wilkinson & Company, Limited, this issue reflects a shift in production from the earlier Thomas De La Rue printings to a new printer and engraving style. The note displays refined guilloche structures, balanced color layering, and detailed intaglio work characteristic of Bradbury Wilkinson’s early 1980s production.

This example is a fully issued circulation note, carrying Serial YAA173980, and does not display any specimen characteristics such as overprints, perforations, punch holes, or control stamps. Its structure and numbering confirm standard production for circulation rather than internal or presentation use.

The obverse features the revised portrait of Queen Elizabeth II, while the Captain James Cook watermark remains consistent with earlier decimal issues, maintaining continuity within New Zealand’s monetary identity. As the highest denomination, the one hundred dollars note served a predominantly institutional and high-value transactional role within the economy.

As part of the ND (1981–1985) Hardie issue, this note represents a mature and stabilized stage of New Zealand’s decimal currency system. The combination of updated portraiture, printer transition, and refined engraving techniques defines this as a distinct phase within the country’s banknote evolution.

Graded PMG 45 Choice Extremely Fine, the note retains strong color presence, clear design detail, and solid structural integrity. The grade reflects moderate circulation handling while preserving the essential visual and technical characteristics of the issue.
