Description and research notes

This official De La Rue printer specimen records the finalized design of the 500 Denari denomination from the Republic of Macedonia’s inaugural post-independence banknote series issued in 1996. Prepared for internal verification and institutional reference, the specimen preserves the complete production artwork while being permanently invalidated for monetary use.

The note displays the full set of Thomas De La Rue & Company specimen control devices. A bold red diagonal SPECIMEN overprint crosses the face of the note, accompanied by the oval printer control stamp reading “DE LA RUE & CO LTD / NO VALUE.” Two punch cancellations are applied in the signature area to prevent circulation while leaving the printed design clearly visible for inspection. These markings identify the note as a controlled reference example rather than a circulating instrument.

The serial format GA0000000 represents De La Rue’s standard specimen control numbering convention for the denomination. Instead of a normal circulating serial number, all digits are replaced with zeros to identify the note as a printer specimen. Separate from this control serial is the printed tracking panel reading “SPECIMEN No. 006,” which records the note’s position within the specimen distribution sequence supplied to the issuing authority and archival collections.

The central motif of the design is the Golden Mask discovered at the archaeological site of Trebeništa near Ohrid. Dating to the 6th century BCE, the funerary mask is one of the most important artifacts associated with the ancient cultures of the Macedonian region. Its stylized facial features and circular hair ornaments translate effectively into engraved linework, making it well suited for both aesthetic and security purposes in banknote design. The same mask appears as the watermark on issued notes, linking the primary vignette with a critical anti-counterfeiting element embedded in the paper.

Printer specimens such as this document the exact configuration delivered by the security printer before the notes entered circulation. Within the production sequence of the denomination, the specimen stage follows the earlier engraving proofs and photographic transparencies prepared during design development and precedes the fully issued circulation notes produced for the National Bank of the Republic of Macedonia.

Certified PMG 64 Choice Uncirculated, this example retains crisp printing detail, sharp color, and clean paper surfaces. The punch cancels, specimen overprint, and control numbering are intrinsic elements of the specimen format itself and reflect the note’s function as a printer verification and archival reference piece rather than a circulating banknote.
